Surf

Blaze turned my otherwise ordinary day into an adventure by driving Karla and I fifty minutes outside of Auckland to Piha for good surf on a black sand beach. He took us straight to meet Reuben, who supplied me with a beginner's board before we stepped into the cold water colored beautifully in the sunset.

My surfing skills are certainly nothing to talk about... but the way the Tasman Sea and the sky looked with the massive moon rising over the houses lit up on the hills is. I kept squealing with happiness and excitement as I tried to make it over the breaking waves without swallowing too much salt water.

Reuben generously invited us to stay for dinner, so we sat around the table in our wet togs (that's Kiwi for "bathing suit"), eating and talking about how goofy accents are and how different things are in America. He also showed us a couple of surf videos he made that I want to share. (I can't embed them, so you'll just have to click on the links.) The second one features Tane, who also joined us for dinner, surfing at Nationals.
